October was a busy month at Wantage & Grove Street Pastors. At the beginning of the month, we celebrated our 15th Anniversary and marked the occasion by giving out hot pasties in the Market Square in the morning and again at midnight. We have often been called ‘street pasties’ and wanted to spend time with our supporters and the people we meet on the streets.
At the end of October, our second afternoon patrol hit the streets of Wantage. We spoke to students and staff outside King Alfred’s Academy and visited a number of shops to connect with the managers. Initially we will patrol once a month, but will continue to recruit new Street Pastors for these sessions.
Halloween is usually a busy night in Wantage. We met lots of people and gave flipflops to a young woman who was walking barefoot and had got blisters. Her partner asked us if we came from Heaven!
In November, one of our teams cleared up lots of litter in Grove and spent some time reconstructing the bins which had been vandalised at Mary Green Park. We spent some time with a number of young people who had attended a funeral earlier in the day in Wantage and we gave some assistance to a man we found lying on the grass. We also found a handbag in Wantage, which we were able to return to the owner via our social media channels.
At the end of November, we held our much loved Curry & Quiz Night, which raised over £800. Thank you to everyone involved and special thanks to Wantage Methodist Church for hosting us once again.
Thank you to you too for your support of Wantage & Grove Street Pastors throughout 2024 and best wishes from all of us for 2025.
