St. Helens Street Pastors
We are a growing team of trained Christian volunteers from local churches. We recently commissioned 3 more volunteers and now have a team of 10 commissioned and active Street Pastors. All of our volunteers are people who care and want to make a difference in our community.
Our first team undertook their first patrol on 23rd December 2016 and here we are over 6 years later, with 2 full teams and looking to expand even further to reach more people in a vulnerable position.
Our mission is to provide a calming presence, a listening ear and practical help to vulnerable people in the night time economy of St. Helens, showing God’s love to anyone and everyone we meet.
We have been patrolling the town centre streets from 10.30pm to 3.30am on the first Friday and the last Friday night of each month. We are now looking to grow a new team to cover one Saturday a month, and also a Safe Space team who will care for vulnerable people within our new Safe Space. As we recruit and train more volunteers, we hope to be able to increase our impact to our community by having a larger number of teams so that we can can cover every weekend.
We often find ourselves being a listening ear for someone who in that moment really needs it; or just providing some practical help by giving out water, flip flops and space blankets to help keep people safe. We are often able to sign post people to services that can really help them; and other times we are just making sure that people get home safely. Being a Street Pastor can look like so many things, but ultimately it is a tool that we use to be the hand’s and feet of Jesus; to show kindness and compassion and the love of God to those around us.
Background
Street Pastors are part of a national initiative which was first pioneered in 2003 and continues to grow throughout the UK and indeed, across the world. Street Pastors are an initiative of the Ascension Trust although each project is an independent charity in their own right.
The Ascension Trust licenses each project and provides expertise to help the projects to run smoothly.
