St Helens Street Pastors

St Helens Street Pastors are a growing team of trained Christian volunteers from local churches. All our volunteers are people who care and want to make a difference in our community; making a choice to be the practical eyes, hands and heart of Jesus in the local night-time economy. We do this by offering simple, practical support to anybody who finds themselves in a vulnerable situation or simply wants someone to listen.

Street Pastors are part of a national team first pioneered in 2003 and the initiative continues to grow throughout the UK and indeed, across the world. Street Pastors are an initiative of the Ascension Trust although each project is an independent charity in their own right.

The Ascension Trust licenses each project and provides expertise to help the projects to run smoothly.

St Helens Project

St Helens Street Pastors started in 2016 and is growing. We are out on the town centre streets from 10.45 p.m. to 3.30 a.m. on the 1st Saturday and 2nd Friday night of each month. As we recruit and train more volunteers we will be able to increase this to a patrol team going out every weekend.

In St Helens we have great support from local churches and community groups. The police and local council are incredibly positive about the initiative; and representatives took the time to speak at our first Street Pastor commissioning service.

Through building relationships with other local agencies and voluntary groups, we are able to build our awareness of services. This will help us to share useful information with people we meet and lead to more opportunities to sign-post people to services that may help people in the different life situations which they might be struggling with.

Street Pastors are also able to offer some low level practical support to help in the immediate situation. This may involve offering water, flip flops, help getting to a taxi rank; alternatively we may simply be a listening ear for someone who’s having a difficult time.

At the moment we have ten trained and commissioned volunteers. We also have three more currently undergoing the training process. Team 1 undertook our first patrol on 23rd December 2016 and here we are almost 3 years later, with almost 3 teams and looking to expand even further to reach more people in a vulnerable position.
