As the frost begins to settle on the pavement and the Christmas lights flicker to life across our high street, we are reminded of the unique beauty – and the unique challenges – of winter. While many head inside to the warmth of their homes, our teams are wrapping up in extra layers to head out into the cold.
This winter, we have a special reason to celebrate: the commissioning of our newest Street Pastor. Commissioning is always a significant moment; it represents a fresh commitment to our streets and a heart willing to serve into the small hours of the morning. Seeing our team grow is a powerful reminder that even as the nights get longer, the light of our ministry continues to expand.
In this winter edition, we’re sharing stories of the quiet conversations, the practical help, and the ‘warmth’ we’ve encountered on the streets recently. We also invite you to step inside the commissioning service of our newest Street Pastor. Even in the coldest weather, the spirit of our community continues to shine bright.
Warm Hearts on Cold Nights: Encounters from the Pavement
A look back at how our teams have been sharing light and warmth through our patrols over the last few months.
- We got into a long conversation about differences in Christian denominations with door staff Derek¹ and Dave¹, and a customer standing outside. He was looking for reassurance and so we quoted parts of Psalm 139, which appeared to inspire him. He hugged each of us.
- Outside the entrance to Bell Court, SP-R and SP-W got into conversation with a couple of local young women, Densie¹ and Davina¹. Denise¹ was desperate for a pair of flip flops which we gave her. She was delighted.
- We met Dom¹ who works behind a local bar. He took a few lollies as he said that he has seen the way that when Street Pastors distribute lollies that it can diffuse some situations, and he said that he does the same.
- At about this time, we noticed there appeared to be a start of an altercation between 2 males, so we followed at a safe distance to observe. One of the group came back to us and said it was “cool”. One in the group had been having ‘a go’ and his mate was trying to get involved, but it was calming down and would be OK.
- We found Debs¹ sitting opposite the British Heart Foundation shop. She was well wrapped up but looked cold. We gave her a hat and scarf and offered to get her something and she asked politely if she could have a cake and a Fanta. We went round to Sainsbury’s and when we were paying the assistant asked us about Street Pastors and how to get involved. We gave her the website address to find out more.
- SP-J got into conversation with a passer by who seemed particularly interested in the reasons for homelessness in the town. He seemed to get quite emotional as the conversation progressed.
¹ Note: Name changed to protect privacy.
While our teams continue to share warmth on the coldest nights, we are also celebrating the growth of our ‘light’ with the addition of a new face to our ranks.
A New Light on the Streets: The Commissioning of SP-J
We are delighted to officially welcome our newest Street Pastor, SP-J, to the team! This past autumn, SP-J was commissioned in a service at his home church, Holy Trinity. Led by the chair of our management team and supported by fellow Street & Prayer Pastors, the service was a wonderful celebration of growth and dedication.
At the heart of every commissioning are the promises that guide our footsteps. These commitments reflect the spirit of caring, listening, and helping that SP-J has pledged to bring to our streets:

- to live a Christian lifestyle of integrity, depending on the Holy Spirit to strengthen him;
- to show Jesus’ love and care to everyone, without regard to class, colour or creed;
- to walk the streets as a public, prayerful presence representing Jesus and his Church to all he meets;
- to work constructively with the police, the local authorities and other agencies involved in serving the night-time community of Stratford-upon-Avon;
- to exercise this ministry under the authority of the Street Pastors initiative and remain accountable to God through it for all he does as a Street Pastor.
To prepare SP-J for the journey ahead, the following blessing was spoken over him, commissioning him to be a light in the dark and a presence of grace in our night-time community:
In the name of Jesus. Amen.
With the promises made and the blessing spoken, SP-J was presented with his cap, badge, and certificate. Now fully equipped and officially part of the team, he is ready to carry the ‘light’ of our ministry onto the pavements, bringing care, listening, and help to our night-time community.
Welcome to the family, SP-J – we are so glad to be walking alongside you!
As we send out new lights to navigate the night, we are reminded that their glow is fuelled by the ‘engine room’ of our night-time patrols – the constant and vital prayer that covers every patrol.
Warmth that sustains: The Power of Prayer
Prayer is the heartbeat of our ministry. While our Street Pastors are the boots on the ground, our Prayer Pastors are the spiritual ‘thermal layer’ that sustains us through the coldest nights.
Did you know? For every patrol on the streets of Stratford-upon-Avon, a dedicated Prayer Pastor remains awake and on watch. They pray specifically for the safety of the team on patrol, for wisdom in difficult moments, and for every person we encounter.
Could this be your role? A Prayer Pastor is someone who is a Christian and part of a local church, with a desire to make a difference through prayer in the town where they live. We are looking for people who:
- Care for the whole community: A passion to pray for everyone out in the night-time economy – from those enjoying a night out to the staff working in our bars and emergency services.
- Have a heart for the vulnerable: A desire to see those in need protected and supported through the power of prayer.
- Support the team: A willingness to invest in the lives of others and provide spiritual ‘cover’ for our Street Pastors as they patrol.
Ready to find out more? Becoming a Prayer Pastor involves a commitment of time and a willingness to undertake some training to understand the unique environment of the night-time economy. Sharing the Light: Beyond the Uniform
Beyond the uniform and the street patrols, there is a quiet dedication in the prayer room. This recent post from our social media captures the heart and the ‘why’ that drives one of our faithful Prayer Pastors:

Prayer Points: Walking into 2026
- The First Watch – As we step into the first patrols of 2026, pray for SP-J and the team. Pray for resilience against the biting winter cold and for a heart of service that remains light even in the midwinter darkness.
- For the vulnerable – As temperatures drop, pray for those sleeping rough or without adequate heating. Pray that our teams are led to the right places at the right times to offer warmth.
- Local Partnerships – Pray for our ongoing relationship with local businesses and the Council. Pray for a unified vision as we work together to keep our night-time community vibrant and safe.
- Emergency Services – Pray for the Police, Ambulance crews, and Door Staff we work alongside. Pray for strength for them during their busiest season.
