On Sunday 14th October Fosuah Poku from the Balham team and myself (David Pollendine) attended a “Say No to Hate Crime” event on Clapham Common. A bench was unveiled to remember Jody Dobrowksi, who was brutally beaten on October 14th 2005 and died from his injuries the next day. Jody was attacked because of his sexual orientation. A number of Police representatives and Counsellors attended as well as local people and friends of Jody. We introduced ourselves to PC Darren Simms, the Police Officer responsible for Northcote Ward and told him about the Balham Patrol. It seemed that we were the only official Christian presence at the ceremony, so it was good that we could be there and stand with the community against this terrible attack and hate crime in general. For more information about this incident in 2005, here’s a link to a BBC news report on Jody’s murder.
